In order to become a licensed New Mexico Contractor or Journeyman the Construction Industries Division (CID) requires that you have either two or four years of hands-on experience working for (or with) a licensed contractor. Two years for specialty licenses and four years for general licenses. The Experience also has to be within the past ten years.

How do they verify my experience?
There is a Work Experience Affidavit that has to be filled out, signed and notarized by a licensed contractor - a contractor that you have been employed by. If you are from out of state and are a contractor in that state, the CID will allow another contractor to verify your experience. Also, the Qualifying Party (QP) application must be filled out by the applicant. The affidavit and QP form are then submitted to the state-licensing agency along with the processing fee. Once the licensi
ng department receives all of your information, they will process your paper work. As long as everything meets the state-licensing agency's requirements, the state testing agency will then contact you to schedule your exams.
