There are two major parts to the licensing procedure:

  1. Pre-Approval
  2. Application submission

Construction Seminars is here to help!

Whether you are just starting out and need to get through the pre-approval, or you have already passed the state exams and need to apply for the license, we can help. Select one of the options above to learn more about the procedures, and how Construction Seminars can assist you with almost every one of them.

There are three steps to becoming a licensed New Mexico Contractor or Journeyman.

  1. Getting Pre-approved by the state-licensing agency to be able to take the state exams.
  2. Take and pass the appropriate trade and business exam.
  3. Apply for the license by submitting an application to the state-licensing agency.

Construction Seminars Can Help With Every Step. Select one of the links above to learn more about each topic.

Step 1: Pre–Approval

In order to become a licensed New Mexico Contractor or Journeyman the Construction Industries Division (CID) requires that you have either two or four years of hands-on experience working for (or with) a licensed contractor. Two years for specialty licenses and four years for general licenses. The Experience also has to be within the past ten years.

We offer a service to handle this process for you. Just a simple call, and we can get the process started today.

How do they verify my experience? There is a Work Experience Affidavit that has to be filled out, signed and notarized by a licensed contractor - a contractor that you have been employed by. If you are from out of state and are a contractor in that state, the CID will allow another contractor to verify your experience. Also, the Qualifying Party (QP) application must be filled out by the applicant. The affidavit and QP form are then submitted to the state-licensing agency along with the processing fee. Once the licensing department receives all of your information, they will process your paper work. As long as everything meets the state-licensing agency's requirements, the state testing agency will then contact you to schedule your exams.

Step 2: Taking and Passing the Exams

Once you have been approved to test by the state-licensing division, you will be contacted by the state-testing agency to schedule for your exams. The New Mexico contractor and journeyman exams are currently being administered by PSI . The exams are given almost every weekday in Albuquerque. Be sure to arrange your test dates to follow immediately after a class.

Taking the Exams

In New Mexico every contractor is required to satisfy two parts of the licensing, they must take the trade related exam and must also either pass a business and law exam or take a two day course in business. Construction Seminars offers test preparation for most trade exams and also the business exam, we also offer the two day state exemption course for the business. Call today to set up your class. The journeyman in New Mexico are only required to take the trade related exams. You must pass all of the required exams before you can apply for the license.

Step 3: Applying for the License

Once you have successfully passed all of the required exams you can submit an application to the state-licensing agency to apply for the license. Submitting the application will consist of the application itself, a state tax identification number, a contractor's license bond, your license fees, and corporate documents if you are incorporating. Once all of the documents and fees are received, the state-licensing agency will process your license. As long as everything is correct on the application, you will be issued your New Mexico State Contractor's License.

Journeyman need only to turn their passing scores into the state-licensing agency. All fees and application will have been collected during the pre-approval process.

Construction Seminars has been assisting Contractors with the submission of the application for more than fifteen years. We understand that your schedule is very busy, and you may not have the time to do all of the running around required for the submission of your license.
